Winners were recently chosen for Image06, a photography competition organized annually by the New York chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP). The contest had two main categories, one for professional photographers and one for students.
I think that the images chosen showcase a wide range of great work, and I highly recommend a visit to the website. The Image ’06 gallery show will run from Monday, June 19th through Saturday June 24th, 2006 at the Thomas Werner Gallery.

In the Professional category, top honors went to Charlotte Oestervang. Interestingly, Oestervang was last year’s winner in the student category. A native of Denmark, in 2000 she earned a bachelor’s degree in fine-art photography from the Academy of Performing Arts, Film and Television in Prague, Czech Republic. She has been a freelance photographer since 2001. Last year, she studied documentary photography at the International Center of Photography in New York City. This fall, she plans to move to Kabul, Afghanistan, to make in-depth stories. You can see more of her work at https://www.oestervang.dk
This year’s top prize in the Student category went to Amy Stein.
A New York City resident and newly minted MFA from the School of
Visual Arts, Stein is currently working on a photo series called
“Stranded,” portraits of people stranded on the side of the road.
“To make these images, I basically drive various US highways
looking for broken down vehicles,” she said. Her portfolio is
viewable at https://www.amysteinphoto.com

A few days ago I had some time to catch up on some of the many podcast episodes I had sitting on my iPod, and came across a particularly informative episode from Derrick Story. Derrick is a talented photographer, and he’s also managing editor of the O’Reilly Network, Mac DevCenter, and O’Reilly Digital Media.
Derrick’s podcast is called The Digital Story, and the specific podcast about which I’m writing is podcast number 35, “Vacation Packing”. Derrick shared numerous travel tips for photographers of any level and I highly recommend listening online or by subscribing to his podcast on iTunes. In addition, podcast 34 has some tips by a guest who will be appearing soon on The Imaging Buffet Book Tour.
I look forward to sharing more “photo-related finds” in the near future.
San Diego’s Museum of the Living Artist is exhibiting its first single medium international fine art show – and the medium is digital. The range of the art selected by Marilyn Kushner, Chair and Curator of the Prints and Drawings at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, spans the range of fine art one discovers in most contemporary shows. The exhibition runs through Sunday, June 11, 2006.
The exhibit is located in the heart of San Diego’s Balboa Park along with many of its cultural institutions – the Timken Museum, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Old Globe Theatre Complex, the Museum of Photographic Art, the Natural History Museum, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and more.

SONY is the major title sponsor for this exhibition at the San Diego Art Institute’s exhibition space. The Digital Art Guild participated in a significant way to bring concept, logistical support and direction to this venture into digital art. This exhibition is part of an umbrella of digital art events taking place in San Diego. More information can be found at the DAG webzine: www.digitalartguild.com.
