I’d like to let people know about two photo competitions being run by three organizations I highly respect, and of which I’m a member or subscriber. The first is the CameraArts Showcase Edition contest. In association with The Center for Fine Art Photography (Ft. Collins, CO) CameraArts magazine is filling the pages of its November/December 2007 issue with the work of the winners of four categories, and the Grand Prize is the cover. The deadline for entries is Friday 9/14 (today) and for more info, visit The Center for Fine Art Photography.
I am a member of The Center For Fine Art Photography’s Ambassador’s Circle, which is a group of volunteers who help to share information about events and calls for entry. More information about the Ambassadors’ program can be found on The Center’s Website. I also subscribe to CameraArts magazine and I highly recommend it for anyone who likes to see beautifully printed photography and well-written essays and technical articles about photography.
The second competition is organized by the APA (Advertising Photographers of America), and is entitled: “Silver to Pixels.” APA is celebrating 25 Years with this competition, which offers photographers a great way to showcase their work and win national recognition from leaders in the photographic and advertising industry. APA welcomes submissions via online entry at https://www.apanational.com/ and has extended the deadline for entries to September 21 at Midnight EST. I’ve been a member of APA/NY for over 5 years and I’ve met and learned from many other photographers at APA events over the years, and through APAnet and APAdigital, two online forums open to both members and non-members.
I just received this news and I’m especially interested in seeing the new Raw conversions using the updates. According to Adobe, Lightroom 1.2 and the new Camera Raw 4.2 plug-in include “improved noise reduction for Bayer patterned sensors.” Leaf Aptus 17, 54s and 75s users should also be happy that those cameras are now supported.
Full press release text from Adobe follows:
Adobe has posted updates to Photoshop® Lightroom™ and the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in, both available immediately for download on Adobe.com. The updates provide raw file support for 14 additional camera models and camera backs within Lightroom and Camera Raw, including the popular Canon EOS 40D.
The camera raw functionality in the Adobe Photoshop software, including Photoshop Lightroom, Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop Elements, provides fast and easy access to the raw image formats produced by many leading professional and midrange digital cameras. Working with these digital negatives allows greater artistic control and flexibility while still maintaining the original raw files. Lightroom and the Camera Raw plug-in also support the same functionality for TIFF and JPEG files. Professional photographers can now quickly and easily import and manipulate raw data from the latest DSLR cameras, producing the highest quality results while saving time.
Lightroom 1.2 and the new Camera Raw 4.2 plug-in support 14 additional digital cameras including the Canon EOS 40D; Fuji FinePix IS-1; Leaf Aptus 17, 54s and 75s; Olympus EVOLT E-510; Panasonic DMC-FZ18; Pentax K100D Super; Phase One P 20+, P 21+, P 25+, P 30+ and P 45+; and Sony A700. Both updates also include improved noise reduction for Bayer patterned sensors, providing better image detail at default noise reduction values. The Lightroom update includes corrections to Microsoft® Windows® Vista™ grid display errors and XMP auto-write performance.

I was just sent this announcement by Fred George, the photographer who took the photograph below. The image, and many others will be shown at the New York Historical Society from 9/11/2007 to 1/1/2008. My condolences go out to the family members and friends of those who lost their lives six years ago.
