Quick Review: Rangefinder October 2008 Issue

I just received the Rangefinder October 2008 issue, which is published by Rangefinder Publishing. It is the Fine Art Issue, and weighs in at 250 pages. It is truly spectacular, and that’s why I’m taking time to mention it. As a former Editorial Director of a photo-related magazine (Digital Imaging, and later renamed Digital Imaging Techniques), I know how much work goes into to putting together a magazine (and Rangefinder is much bigger than the one that I worked on).

rangefinderoct2008.jpgHere are a few reasons why I think the issue is so impressive:

• The art portfolios, well-written articles and advice from many photographers, including Eric Meola, Lois Greenfeld, Michael Eastman, Mary McGrath, Andy Katz and others are truly stunning;
• The layout and design of the issue (as usual) is fantastic.
• The imagery and tips from “My Lessons from the Lemon Grove” by Deanna Urs are excellent;
• The new Promo Guide, with special offers on a wide range of products and services is well thought-out and organized;
• John Rettie’s overviews of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Adobe CS4 and onOne Software’s Focal Point are very informative.

I was also very happy to see that many of the articles are available as downloadable PDFs on this page of the Rangefinder website.

It’s also great that the printed magazine is free to qualified photographic professionals. You can find the page to submit your information for a free print subscription here.

Over the last year, I’ve contributed some of my images and tips to a few Rangefinder and AfterCapture articles. They are available below for download.

Photokina 2008 News is Hitting the Airwaves: Here Are a Few Links to Keep Updated

I just read a Twitter message by Dan Havlik, Technology Editor at Photo District News. In the short note (all Twitter notes are brief), he mentioned his article on PDNGearGuide about Day 1 at Photokina, being held in Cologne, Germany from September 23-29, 2008. I like Dan’s writing style and take on things. You can read the article here, and I recommend returning for follow-up articles as the show progresses. In a related article, Dan covers Leica’s announcement of a 37.5 megapixel digital SLR named the Leica S2.

Imaging-Resource.com has an impressive section of their site dedicated to covering the show. There are videos, many press releases, and a lot of well-written articles about the things their editors are seeing. You can find the main page here.

For even more news from the show, interspersed with many other photo-related stories, check out ImagingInsider.com.

For general information about photokina, visit the main show site page here. The official news blog for the show can be found here. I was particularly impressed by the number of Photography exhibitions being held during the event. You can find a list of all the exhibitions on the main show site under “Supporting programme.” I’d love to see the Lomography show. For more about Lomography, visit the Lomographic Society International site. This description is from the official newsfeed: “Always open to visitors, the Analogue Lomography Lounge will offer a gigantic LomoWall exhibition with 100,000 photos and will also host presentations, workshops, and crash courses about analogue photography run by international lomography experts.”

The wide range of exhibitions at photokina truly showcase the power of photography, and the show appears to be THE place for companies to announce and show their new cameras, printers and other photo products.

Seth Resnick Special Event in NYC: 9/10/2008

I just received an e-mail announcement about an event that looks very interesting. Seth Resnick will be doing a special event entitled: R&R – Resilience & Rejuvenation – for the Digital Photographer in New York City at Adorama Camera on September 10, 2008 from 6:30-9:30PM.

This is a portion of the event description:

Join us as Seth shares anecdotes on dealing with clients, both for assignment and stock, favorite and most unusual projects and what drove him to tackle them, his observations on the state of the industry and his take on stock photography.

The cost of this seminar is $25, and each attendee, in exchange for a copy of their registration receipt, will be given a $25 coupon valid for 30 days towards the purchase of any merchandise when presented at Adorama’s retail store or online at www.adorama.com.

Seth Resnick is a great teacher and many people (including me) have benefited from his lectures at seminars and events like the PhotoPlus Expo. The D-65 Workshops he hosts with his partner Jamie Spritzer across the United States consistently sell out. They center around workflow using Photoshop, and they now include training with Lightroom 2.0.

This evening event is Sponsored by Adorama and Canon. For more information or to register, visit this page.
