Free lecture by Derrick Story at the Stanford/Palo Alto Macintosh Users Group

I just learned from ImagingInsider.com that photographer and author Derrick Story will be giving a free lecture at the Stanford/Palo Alto Macintosh Users Group (SMUG) on Monday evening, Aug. 6. He will cover iPhoto 6, as well as techniques for making great pictures.

Derrick has shared a tremendous amount of information over the years through his books, podcasts and various blogs on many topics including: digital photography; Apple Aperture; Adobe Photoshop Lightroom; Adobe Photoshop; Apple iPhoto; and iPod and iTunes.

In this post from about a year ago, I recommended a specific travel photo-related podcast by Derrick, on his very informative blog and podcast, The Digital Story. I found the show to be packed full of good advice for anyone who plans to travel with a camera.

Derrick is also co-host of one of my favorite podcasts, The iLifeZone.

Cool wind-reduction tip for compact cameras

I just found a link to a cool wind-reduction tip on this site: www.photojojo.com. Photojojo.com has many great tips and do it yourself photo projects.

Here’s a direct link to the tip on PopPhoto.com.

I haven’t tried it, but I have a compact Canon SD600 camera that is very similar, and I plan to test this the next time I film outdoors. I’m surprised at the quality of the sound that the small Canon cameras produce in video mode.

Fireworks Photography Tips Article

A few months ago, I contributed a number of fireworks photography tips for Tamron’s eViewfinder newsletter and Tamron’s online Learning Center. You can find the article here. With July 4th approaching, many people in the United States will certainly be watching fireworks displays.

Regardless of where you live, I hope that these tips inspire you to grab your tripod and get creative with the many options you have when photographing fireworks. Please be careful if you are planning to use fireworks; I recommend leaving it up to the pros–you’ll save money, and more importantly, you’ll have a far less chance of getting injured. I also interviewed two photographers in May for the newsletter. Those can be found by selecting Article 1 and Article 3 at the top of the page.

Enjoy the holiday!
