I’ve been conducting full-day inkjet printing/color management workshops over the past six months in Berkley Heights, NJ. The space where they are held is excellent, and the small class size of no more than five students helps make it easy for people to ask questions. Below is the press release for two full-day workshops that I’m giving January 9 and 10, 2008. Also, there is one space available for the same workshop this Sat. October 13 from 10:00am-5:00pm.

BERKLEY HEIGHTS, NJ, December 10, 2008 – New Jersey Media Center LLC will host two separate full-day workshops, entitled Fine-Art Inkjet Printing: How to Prepare Files and Make Gallery-Quality Prints on Friday, January 9, 2009 and Saturday, January 10, 2009 from 10:00am-5:00pm. The workshops, held at Nancy Ori Studios in Berkley Heights, NJ and conducted by photographer and consultant Andrew Darlow, are designed for professional and amateur photographers, as well as other artists.

The workshops, each limited to just five participants, will cover the following: an overview of pro-quality printers from Canon, Epson and HP; a description of more than 20 recommended inkjet papers (including glossy, fiber gloss, and watercolor); color management hardware and software options (including a demonstration of how to make custom monitor and printer profiles); and tips for optimizing workflow and print quality with specific papers and printers in Adobe Lightroom 2, Photoshop CS2/CS3/CS4, and other programs.

Selected prints output from Canon, Epson and HP printers will be demonstrated and discussed, and each attendee will have at least two prints made of their work on a pigment-based inkjet printer (13-inch-wide Epson and HP printers will be used). Participants will receive more than 30 letter-sized blank sheets of high-end inkjet papers for testing, and a class binder detailing the contents of the presentation, as well as the step-by-step print workflow covered in the workshop will be provided to each participant. Each attendee will also receive a 30 minute private phone follow-up consultation with Andrew Darlow. Continue reading

SVA Announces Online Masters Digital Photo Program and Online Info Session on 12/8/2008

I recently corresponded with Katrin Eismann, noted author, Photoshop Hall of Fame member, and Department chair of the School of Visual Arts (SVA) Masters in Digital Photography Program (MPS). I learned that SVA is offering the MPS Digital Photography program online beginning in the fall of 2009. MPS students will complete the fall and spring classes (Advanced Imaging, Color Management, Photo Illustration, Studio Management, etc) online and will then come to New York City to complete their thesis projects, which includes the large format print class, developing a web presence, designing a brand, and producing the collateral for a New York Exhibition. Below is an overview of the program, which looks to me to be a fantastic opportunity:

The Master of Professional Studies in Digital Photography is a concentrated course of studies in both commercial and fine art digital photography that addresses the entire imaging workflow – from image capture and enhancement to online distribution and final display. Under the guidance of leading photographers, retouchers, designers and studio managers, students master the latest tools and techniques to create technically perfect and aesthetically compelling images. In addition to developing a body of work, students become versed in the critical aspects of branding, marketing, studio operations and current business practices.

Katrin Eismann added these comments about the program: “The curriculum we’ve developed is exceptional, rigorous, and the possibility to complete an accredited online Masters degree with a low-residency aspect in New York City is unique. Just as in the residency classroom we will be limiting the number of students accepted to insure the highest-quality learning and intensive interaction with each instructor.”

An online information session for the program will take place on Monday, December 8, from 6:30-8:30pm. To RSVP for the session, visit www.sva.edu/gradopenhouse/app, and for additional information about the program, visit www.sva.edu/digitalphoto .

Below is a description of the event from the press release:

The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops partners with National Geographic to bring together the award-winning photojournalist and humanitarian Reza and bestselling writer Sebastian Junger, author of The Perfect Storm and Fire, for an evening of spectacular images and compelling conversation.

Reza has devoted his life to bearing witness through his camera to the struggles and hopes of oppressed people around the world. Culled from a 30-year chronicle of his travels to places of conflict, this remarkable photographer will share with the Santa Fe community a selection exquisite images that pair turmoil with hope, joy with despair.

Joining Reza is Sebastian Junger who has traveled the world in his pursuit of covering life on the edge as a photojournalist for such publications as National Geographic, Newsweek and Time. Following an unforgettable journey through war-torn Afghanistan with Reza in the fall of 2000, he has written the introduction to the recently published book, REZA WAR + PEACE, (National Geographic Focal Point) that follows Reza’s courageous career to the frontlines of war and areas of unrest. A book signing of REZA WAR + PEACE, with a foreword by Sebastian Junger, will follow the program.

The evening’s proceeds will benefit PHOTO TEENS – a program hosted by The Santa Fe Photographic Workshops to inspire Santa Fe High School students in their pursuit of photography.
