Aperture Nature Photography Workshops First Expedition: Sep. 24-27, 2008

The Aperture Nature Photography Workshops first expedition is happening September 24-27, 2008 at Grand Tetons National Park in Wyoming. This trip is just one of four unique workshops being held at Olympic, Tetons, Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks. The event pairs four amateur photographers with four pros in some of the most beautiful locations on earth. The collective works of the photographers involved will be included in a new book published by Peachpit Press, with some proceeds going to a photographic charity.

The amateur photographers who attend were selected in a nationwide contest, and each photographer (professional and amateur), will spend time in the field shooting as well as time in the classroom using Apple Aperture to sort, keyword, rate, edit and share their work. To see the winning entries, which are truly stunning, visit this page.

The event’s media sponsor is one of my favorite podcasts and websites: This Week in Photography, and the corporate sponsors are as follows:

In addition, photographer Lisa Bettany will be reporting on the first expedition to the Tetons.

Photokina 2008 News is Hitting the Airwaves: Here Are a Few Links to Keep Updated

I just read a Twitter message by Dan Havlik, Technology Editor at Photo District News. In the short note (all Twitter notes are brief), he mentioned his article on PDNGearGuide about Day 1 at Photokina, being held in Cologne, Germany from September 23-29, 2008. I like Dan’s writing style and take on things. You can read the article here, and I recommend returning for follow-up articles as the show progresses. In a related article, Dan covers Leica’s announcement of a 37.5 megapixel digital SLR named the Leica S2.

Imaging-Resource.com has an impressive section of their site dedicated to covering the show. There are videos, many press releases, and a lot of well-written articles about the things their editors are seeing. You can find the main page here.

For even more news from the show, interspersed with many other photo-related stories, check out ImagingInsider.com.

For general information about photokina, visit the main show site page here. The official news blog for the show can be found here. I was particularly impressed by the number of Photography exhibitions being held during the event. You can find a list of all the exhibitions on the main show site under “Supporting programme.” I’d love to see the Lomography show. For more about Lomography, visit the Lomographic Society International site. This description is from the official newsfeed: “Always open to visitors, the Analogue Lomography Lounge will offer a gigantic LomoWall exhibition with 100,000 photos and will also host presentations, workshops, and crash courses about analogue photography run by international lomography experts.”

The wide range of exhibitions at photokina truly showcase the power of photography, and the show appears to be THE place for companies to announce and show their new cameras, printers and other photo products.

Art Exhibition in San Diego 10/4-11/15: Urban Legends and Country Tales

I recently had the honor of being one of the jurors for an upcoming fine art juried show entitled “Urban Legends and Country Tales.” This show is an international print exhibit that will be on display from October 4 to November 15, 2008 at Bonita Museum in Bonita, CA. The opening and public reception will be 6-8:30pm on Saturday, October 4, 2008.

I found the work to be very diverse, and many of the pieces really moved me. There was a mix of unretouched photographs, digitally retouched images, images created entirely using a computer, and images that had a combination of photography and drawing/painting effects (produced using a computer).

This description of the show is from the Digital Art Guild website:

The Digital Art Guild brings an international print exhibit to the San Diego area. Fifty outstanding prints demonstrate the multiple directions art has taken in the contemporary art world – both in pluralism of styles and the hybridism of technique and media. In addition to the print exhibit, a companion exhibition book is available…Artists represented in Urban Legends and Country Tales are from San Diego, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Hawaii, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Florida, England and Canada.

Admission is free to the Bonita Museum, 4355 Bonita Road, Bonita CA 91902. Hours are 10:00am – 4:00pm – Wednesday through Saturday. For more information, including a list of exhibiting artists and a look at some of the entries, visit the show page on the Digital Art Guild’s website.
