I’m Speaking this Thursday 10/23/2008 at PhotoPlus Expo in NYC

I haven’t posted anything here yet about the two hour seminar that I’m giving this week at the PhotoPlus Expo at the Javits Center in New York City. I’ve been busy testing new papers, and revisiting many others that I’ve used over the years. I’m also testing and researching new printers so that I have all the info I need to share my thoughts and experiences.

Below is a description of my seminar (TC8):

How To Choose the Right Inkjet Printers and Papers
Thursday, Oct 23, 2008: 3:45 PM – 5:45 PM

This lecture/demonstration by Andrew Darlow—photographer, consultant and author—covers the following: an overview of pro-quality printers from Canon, Epson and HP; a description of more than 20 recommended inkjet papers (including glossy, fiber gloss, and watercolor); and tips for optimizing print quality with specific papers and printers, such as how to effectively coat papers and canvas for better protection and longevity. Selected prints output from Canon, Epson and HP printers will be on display, and participants will receive more than 25 letter-sized blank sheets of high-end inkjet papers for testing. Handouts describing the papers and products discussed during the workshop will also be provided.

As I count them up, I will actually be giving to each participant more than 40 letter-sized blank sheets of high-end inkjet papers (2 sheets each more than 20 gloss, semi-gloss, fiber gloss and fiber-semi-gloss, matte and watercolor papers) from a number of different companies. These were chosen by me because I’ve tested them and think that they are worth trying (primarily if you have a pigment-based inkjet printer).

There are only 100 spaces available for this workshop. To check pricing, or to register, visit the PhotoPlus Expo website registration page.

Epson Print Academy Launches New 15 City Tour

Over the last few years I’ve attended two Epson Print Academy live events in New York City, and I’ve also reviewed the Epson Online Experience, which was an online training series that featured many of the videos that were produced for the live Epson Print Academy events. After both of the Print Academy events I attended, I came away with a lot of information that helped me make better photos, files and prints. You can read an overview of my experience at The Epson Print Academy in 2006 here.

The newest Epson Print Academy has just been announced, with a 15-city tour that begins on Nov. 8 in Atlanta, GA and continues through May 2009 with stops throughout North America.

After seeing many framed prints output on the new Epson Stylus Pro 7900 and 9900 on Epson Premium Semi-gloss Photo Paper at a recent press event, I think that attendees will be very impressed by the prints that they see at the Print Academy, as well as the knowledge that they gain there.

The people teaching truly know printmaking and file preparation, and the companies who will have tables at the event also add to the value of the program. For example, just seeing SoLux bulbs in use at the event and asking questions about different beam spreads, intensity and color temperature can help anyone better light their work in a gallery, a studio or at home.

Aperture Nature Photography Workshops First Expedition: Sep. 24-27, 2008

The Aperture Nature Photography Workshops first expedition is happening September 24-27, 2008 at Grand Tetons National Park in Wyoming. This trip is just one of four unique workshops being held at Olympic, Tetons, Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks. The event pairs four amateur photographers with four pros in some of the most beautiful locations on earth. The collective works of the photographers involved will be included in a new book published by Peachpit Press, with some proceeds going to a photographic charity.

The amateur photographers who attend were selected in a nationwide contest, and each photographer (professional and amateur), will spend time in the field shooting as well as time in the classroom using Apple Aperture to sort, keyword, rate, edit and share their work. To see the winning entries, which are truly stunning, visit this page.

The event’s media sponsor is one of my favorite podcasts and websites: This Week in Photography, and the corporate sponsors are as follows:

In addition, photographer Lisa Bettany will be reporting on the first expedition to the Tetons.

For more info about how to keep updated on this expedition as well details about how you can enter the contest, visit the event’s main site at https://aperturenatureworkshops.com.
